The train from New York to Boston takes 4 hours if there's no delays, but I have been on trains before that were delayed 2-3 hours. My dog can hold it for that long, though not happily, but if your dog can't I wouldn't risk it. Anyways I am contemplating the Sturdi XL bag. Chomp ate her Sherpa bag one day while we were out (she gets mad when we leave her sometimes) – so we need a new one. my concern is the following: I believe the carrier does fit on the flight but the weight may be an issue. It seems like you get a different answer from everyone you talk to from delta. I called a month ago and they said if she fits, the weight doesn't matter. And I called today and another lady said it is only 20 pounds combined weight for carrier and dog. Does anyone know if this would work if she fits well and comfortably in the carrier, the carrier fits well under the seat BUT it is over 20 pounds? I am not taking luggage so I don't understand the problem with the weight.

All that seemed reasonable, and since I was looking for direct flights from my home city airport, I had little reason to not book with American Airlines. Soft-sided collapsible kennels can be slightly larger but still need to fit under the seat without having to excessively collapse the kennel, have to be secure, padded, made of water-repellant material and have nylon mesh ventilation on 2 or more sides. The reason it is so difficult to find an answer to this question is that there is no straightforward answer.
