About this deal

Twelve-year-old Pierce is deeply marked by the loss of his father. How has his father shaped his character? What lessons does herecall his father imparting upon him? This book is a balm for my weariness and a boon to my heart. It has made me pause and ponder the goodness and the faithfulness of God and has challenged me to stop remaining in the place I've been and move on toward a more healed version of myself.

I went to see this as a play early in its first run in London in 1997. I went to see it with my new girlfriend at the time who later became my wife and later-still my ex-wife. So reading this again for the first time in 24 years has come as quite a surprise. Many things that I don’t remember, and some quite prophetic places, given what happened much later. Marber is good at acting like he does. The characters are witty, the situations they get themselves into are mind-bending in an interesting way, and the dialogue is well-written, staccato and blunt in a way that must have felt challenging and 'edgy' in the 1990s. Here, to me, it just felt like the eleven-year-old who thinks he's hard core because he uses the F-word. Stop trying to game the system and focus instead on planning the perfect cruise vacation you and your loved ones will reminisce about long after you've forgotten how much you paid for the trip. This book was written from the heart and bathed in prayer. It's a book to prayerfully read along with your Bible and a journal.

The novel is also about childhood friendship. How do these formative relationships affect not only one’s childhood, but also carry reverberations into adulthood? I will say the film holds more power then the play version. Although I was surprised that certain things in the play differed from the film quite alot. The conclusion, although rushed (and not to my satisfaction) was a surprising one, and I really did not see it coming. In 1991, on a small, isolated island off the coast of Newfoundland, twelve-year-old Pierce Jacobs struggles to come to terms with the death of his father. It’s been three years since his dad, a fisherman, disappeared in the cold, unforgiving Atlantic, his body never recovered. Pierce is determined to save enough money to fix his father’s old boat and take it out to sea. But life on the island is quiet and hard. The local fishing industry is on the brink of collapse, threatening to take an ages-old way of life with it. The community is hit even harder when a young teen named Anna Tessier goes missing. Closer is the story of Emma, whose husband Shaun, instantly falls in love with her boss, Joanne, and moves in with her within two weeks. Emma and Shaun have been separated for months, despite the fact that they still live in the same house, due to wanting to make their separation easier on their ten year old daughter Maisie, and to allow them to share house and childcare duties. Once Shaun meets Joanne, he wants out of their unusual living arrangement, while Emma is also having to deal with a boss who is living with her not quite ex-husband.

Hey, it's clear that Marber really hates love.Emma is a paralegal with a new and demanding job. She’s excited to put in the extra hours, as long as her husband—Shaun—is willing to help her out at home. Emma has no doubts that Shaun loves their daughter—Maisie—but he’s never been very helpful with her care or the household chores.
