About this deal

Well, as the star rating I gave it probably gives away, it didn't. When I was young, I didn't care as much about all the holes in the worldbuilding, content to forge ahead with the story and see how Matthias was going to defeat the evil Cluny the Scourge, but now that worldbuilding is almost my primary interest in fantasy there are too many questions that come up that annoy me for me to really immerse myself in the story. However, unlike the aforementioned, this I think actually holds up. The story is epic, it's pretty brutal for a children's story, and overall the heroes and villains are likable in their own way, the heroes for their humor and charm and the villains for their dastardly deeds.

Grade level(s):6-10th grade The language is easily accessible for most students. Within this age range, teaching students about a period of history to which they often cannot relate is difficult without good visuals. The graphic novel allows students to visualize the experiences of the abbot mice, while simultaneously delving into the history of the medieval period and all of the ramifications that were involved in survival during that period. In 1998, Redwall was adapted into a two-act musical opera by Evelyn Swennson, Redwall: The Legend of Redwall Abbey. The artwork from what I can tell was rendered in charcoal, graphite, and ink. I like how the lighting and for was rendered.

Brian Jacques (pronounced 'jakes') was born in Liverpool, England on June 15th, 1939. Along with forty percent of the population of Liverpool, his ancestral roots are in Ireland, County Cork to be exact. It has been almost two decades since I read the full novel and there was a lot that I had forgotten so this was a wonderful reminder of the story. It has definitely helped me make a decision about starting this series over again since I've always been a fan of anthropomorphic stories.

I would highly recommend this book as an action/adventure story for middle and high school students, with the caveat that there is violence throughout the book as the Redwall mice and friends defend themselves from the marauding rats. Characters on both sides die often, and sometimes in gruesome ways (for example, the huge snake who has stolen Martin the Warrior's sword is eventually decapitated by Matthias).

Tsarmina, the evil self-proclaimed queen of Mossflower, is quite the ballistic type personality that grows on the reader, even though she is the main antagonists of the story. As you progress through the story, the reader will start to see paranoia and insanity slowly take over her, and it is quite entertaining to watch. The story has some good comedic quality throughout. One of these core laughable traits of the story is how she conducts her army and captains. Through her short lived reign, she promoted over a five or more captains due to blunders which ended in death or displeasing the queen. She as a villain was true to her nature, instilling fear as a means to control her weasel and rat army.
